Yi-Bing Chu, born into a family of musicians, began studying the cello at the age of eight with his father, a professor at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. He performed in concerts from a young age and recorded his first album at just ten years old. At that time, the Cultural Revolution had not yet ended, and classical music was still officially banned. In 1984, Chu Yi-Bing joined the class of the renowned French cellist Maurice Gendron at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, where he received his first prize in 1987. Winner of the international music performance competition in Geneva in 1986, he became a soloist with the Basel Symphony Orchestra in Switzerland in 1989, where he remained until 2004. From 2004 to 2018, Chu Yi-Bing was a professor at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where he passionately contributed to the promotion and dissemination of chamber music throughout China. He founded the Chu Yi-Bing Cello Ensemble, composed of his cello students, and has given hundreds of concerts across the country for the past 15 years. He has performed in front of illustrious personalities, such as the Chinese, French, and American presidents, but also aims to bring classical music to as many people as possible by performing in universities, hospitals, factories, and prisons for millions of Chinese who have limited access to classical music. As the founder and director of the SuperCello Festival, Chu Yi-Bing has produced three recordings with his cello ensemble.
